Nnamdi Azikiwe University, shortly called UNIZIK or NAU has 14 faculties and the Nursing Sciences department falls under the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology. The department was established in 1991, the same time as the university.

The philosophy of the Unizik Department of Nursing Science is derived from the philosophy of the University, and the philosophy of the nursing profession that focuses on quality services to humanity. Unizik Nursing Department offers Undergraduate ( BSc,) and graduate ( PGD, MSc, and Ph.D.) Nursing programs.

Unizik First-year nursing students take their first-year academic program at the Awka campus and then move over to the Nnewi campus to continue their studies till graduation. The department has 37 staff members ( as of March 2024) who with their joint efforts, carry on educational activities going on in the department.

Unizik has 7 Nursing Specializations: Community Health Nursing, (ii) Maternal and Child Health Nursing, (iii) Diploma in Nursing Science (iv) Nursing Administration, (v) Nursing Education, (vi) Medical Surgical Nursing, (vii) Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

Nursing Programs offered at Unizik

Nursing programs at Nnamdi Azikiwe University are developed and designed to prepare nursing professionals capable of providing general nursing, midwifery, and community health nursing services including psychiatry. The department offers a BNSc program, a PGD nursing program, an MNSc program, and a doctor of philosophy nursing program.

The BNSc program is completed in 5 years. This consists 5 academic sessions, and 10 semesters

Unizik Department of Nursing Admissions and Admission Requirements

Candidates are admitted into the university through UTME, and D/E (Direct Entry). These candidates also go through a screening test (POST-UTME) conducted in the University before their admission into the University, though this screening has been stopped since 2020. Candidates are now screened by some processes involving their UTME score and WAEC grades. Admission into Nnamdi Azikiwe University is strictly on MERIT.

Unizik Department of Nursing admission requirements

Have at least credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics in WAEC results (not more than two sittings). Meet the required cut-off mark for nursing. This is usually around 240. Aspirants with higher grades in WAEC and a JAMB score of 260 and above will have a greater chance of admission.

Direct entry students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.5 by the end of their second-year study in their present course of study. The transfer fee is between #120,000 to #200,000.

Requirements for O’level (BSc)

5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics in not more than two sittings obtained at not more than two sittings.

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

The candidate must be a graduate of  Nursing from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a third-class degree or a minimum of lower  Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, a recognized Institution.

Requirements for Master’s Degree (MSc)

  1. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 2.5 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
  2. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma with an FCGPA of not less than 3.00 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree

A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Nursing with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 5-point scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied.

Unizik School Fees Nursing

Unizik School fees for freshers is #100,000, acceptance fee is #67,000 for the 2024/2025 academic session. Other payments include GST fees, faculty and departmental clearance fees, ID card fees, etc.

Unizik cut-off mark for nursing 2024/2025 academic session

Unizik cutoff mark for nursing 2024/2025 academic session is 299. If you do not score up to this, you’ll not be given an admission on merit. However, if you were transferred to study another course instead of nursing, you can go ahead, study the course and switch back to nursing in your second year, but you must make a good Go.

Unizik started offering merit based admissiotn in October 2024.

    1. Cut-off mark for community health nursing a unizik is usually at 220 and above. To have a greater chance for an admission, we advise you score above 240.

  1. My daughter scored 248 in jamb with credit in all her required key subjects pls can she get nursing in unizik

    1. She has a good score already. What she should focus on now is getting at least 70 percent in her post UTME score, this screening has a greater effect for her admission.

      I encourage her to study well and score high.
